Hausa African Salad

Salad is a cold dish which is a mixture of vegetables, beans, nuts, and other toppings in given quantities and are served especially with dressing. It can be taken alone as a meal or as complement to meals. Besides the nutritional value of salad, it is a dish that aids mutual bonding as it is enjoyed with loved ones and makes occasions colourful. The dressing on the salad enhances the taste and aids mastication.

As there are hundreds of salad recipes all over the world, Africans have their own recipes adding to the number. Salad recipe is subject to the region and vegetables available or widely consumed. This post will focus on Hausa African Salad. Hausa is an ethnic group in Nigeria dominating the northern region with a population of about 55,622,000. The Hausa are a diverse but culturally homogenous people. This is one of the major ethnic groups in Nigeria others being Yoruba and Igbo which also have their native salad recipes.


The Hausa African salad is common among the northerners. It can be taken as a meal complement or a meal alone depending on what suits you or what the occasion demands. It is highly nutritious as it is a balanced diet.

The dish is made of Moringa leaves, Kulikuli, tomato, onion and salt to taste;

Moringa leaves (Moringa oleifera)
Moringa trees are called the drumstick tree or miracle tree commonly grown in India, other Asian countries and Africa. It is referred to as miracle tree because of its medicinal properties and health benefits. It also has antifungal, antiviral, antidepressant and antiinflammatory properties. Contains protein, vitamins, mineral, extremely low in fat and has no harmful cholesterol.

Kulikuli
This is a peanut cake referred to as the northern favourite snack. It is loved and consumed by both old and young of different status and background. It is gotten from peanut through a series of processes listed below;

1. Blend peanut with little water to form dough
2. Knead dough into desired shape
3. fry in oil till crispy and golden brown in colour
4. drain and leave to cool
